Matti Makkonen, who is the “father of SMS”, has died at the age of 63. in 1984, Matti Makkonen piched the original idea for SMS. The man credited with the initial idea for a Short Messaging Service (SMS) has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that spawned a generation of technology. Finnish language daily Ilkka reported that, “Makkonen, a Finnish national, passed away on Friday June 26, 2015 at the age of 63 following serious illness”. He was quick to downplay his involvement and saw SMS as a “joint effort” between many people, but much of the initial credit belongs to him. it was only on December 3 in 1992 that the first text message was sent, Vodafone’s director Richard Jarvis at a work party.
