Talking Fingers in British Columbia

I am struck over and over by the power of the spoken word.  I am humbled by people’s stories and the nuances of speech and speech patterns. I will continue to feel inspired by the act of oral transcription; the miracles of letting my fingers do the walking, as my ears hear the talking! I am grateful that my body and mind can do this, in service of keeping the stories of our Jewish community elders alive and transcribed for the Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia.

We take photos of our maturing children, families and friends throughout all the stages, as we all preserve museums of our own. How wonderful that we can take photos and videos with all of the ways technology has provided for us today.  We capture moments in time and then file them in a myriad of ways. Some are stored forever or others like those taken on Snapshot, live for 5 seconds.

Life is dynamic as the old becomes old, and the new becomes new. Today we have access to a wide spectrum of how to take both still and talking photographs.  Whether it is through Instagram, i-Phones, i-Pads, Facebook, emails, WhatsApp or twitter, communication is transferred. Luckily it is our motor brain-eye-hand co-ordination that gets the work done to: transcribe, transpire or even translate!

Our communal and collective fingers are all busy these days responding to emails, sending a message on twitter, responding and sending a text or writing or commenting on a blog. Our respective fingers are indeed messengers of our thoughts.

Let us be mindful to give our fingers a break and interact with some good face to face conversations in beautiful British Columbia!

Yours in MOMentum,
Debbie Havusha
