Born in Israel and proud of it!

Israel first welcomed me when I was born in Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva. My mother went to Israel to birth me there, to be close to her parents. The plan was to return back to Canada where she had immigrated to, with my father, 3 years prior. Upon leaving Israel in 1960, my parent’s entourage consisted of a new baby girl and my one year old brother.

Growing up in Ottawa, while attending Jewish day school, I took great pride in being coined a ‘Sabra’ or rather a ‘Sabareet’ (feminine noun for a female born in Israel). When I made ‘Aliyah’ in 1982, I lived with my grandparents, Savta Rivka (z’l) and Saba Chaim (z’l) on Pika Street in Petah Tikva. I still have vivid memories of sitting on the ‘meer-peh-set’ (balcony). The place where we would deliberate on subject matters as the television blared in the background, acutely aware of the endearing commotions of life abound.

When I tell people that our daughters Sivan and Shani made ‘Aliyah’ last year, the reactions vary. Some convey a kind of ambivalent sadness while others resonate with the pride I feel, as I proclaim the news. Our twin daughters feel at home and connected to their rich Jewish heritage and fiery Israeli culture.

Join Vancouver’s Jewish community on April 22nd to celebrate the birth of Israel’s 67th birthday.
