Jane Bordeaux, the successful Israeli trio who play American Folk Country acoustic music in Hebrew, is coming to Vancouver to perform at our community’s biggest Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration on May 1st at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. The event is nearly sold out, but there are still a few great seats left. Act quickly and they could be yours.

The band was founded in 2012 by Doron Talmon, Amir Zeevi and Mati Gilad through a competition of original songs at Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Ramat Hasharon, near Tel Aviv. The three talented band members had done great at the competition and haven’t stopped playing since.

The Band members told Yossilinks that “Doron and Mati met in Rimon School for Music, forming the band for a school competition. Back than our formation was a bit larger, comprising of five players including drummer and electric guitar. We searched for a new guitar player since our former had left for studies abroad, so we had Amir (He and Mati met in the military service, army band) who was just back from studies in NYC to join us,” the band explained.

We needed to make an acoustic set for a small gig, so when the three of us started playing an acoustic version of the songs, something clicked, lyrics came to the front and we really liked the organic sound, so we decided to keep it that way, they said.

The band has played in festivals around Israel, growing its dedicated followers, leading it to be the most played band of 2015 on Galgalatz, Israel’s most popular radio station.

Yossilinks: How did Jane Bordeaux became such a great success?

Jane Bordeaux: “We wish to believe that Jane Bordeaux’ success is simply because people love our songs! We don’t think we have a “secret”, but we guess that the country folkish sounds combined with Hebrew lyrics, some humor and a live show that we put a lot of effort in trying to make it the best we can, was kind of fresh to the crowd around here in Israel.“

Yossilinks: You seem to form a great relationship with your audience who seems to be growing in and out of Israel.

Jane Bordeaux: “We are certain that communication with the crowd is one of the things that kept us moving forward, whether if its digital, or the old fashion way. We were performing all over the country, at small bars, close to the audience and people would tell us after the shows what they liked or didn’t like about some songs, what made them laugh, what made them cry. We had a three-songs CD in a brown paper bag we gave after the shows. Later on, when we used crowd funding for our first album, all these friends we mat along the way was sharing our Head-Start project and we started having this social media network going on.

Yossilinks: your songs’ texts are very unique and sometimes controversial.

Jane Bordeaux: “Its hard to talk about your own text, but we think its speciality might be about the combination of “sad” subjects that are treated with humor, simple every-day language with more lyrical impressions. These things may be quite common in country music that inspires us a lot.”

The band repeatedly receives enthusiastic reviews from audience and critics around Israel for beautiful songs, including “Ech Efshar She Lo” (“How can you not fall in love”), “Einav”, “Maagalim” and “Whiskey” which have reached the top playlists on the Israeli radio. Some of the reviews include:

“The best Musical Success of the Past year”- Itay Shtern,”Haaretz”

“Jane Bordeaux are the sweetest candy in the Israeli music industry, you must catch them performing live as soon as possible.”- Gal Ohovsky, “Mako”

With the simplicity of country songs, vocal harmonies and story telling wrapped in humour and sincerity, you simply can’t help but fall in love.
